What to expect when you first meet with a financial advisor

What to expect when you first meet with a financial advisor

What should you expect to discuss when you meet with a financial planner? It’s a question we’re often asked. We aren’t as scary as we look, honest. When we first meet with a potential client we don’t talk shop. We just want to get to know you, your circumstance, family, and hopes for the future. But, when we do get down to the nitty-gritty of financial planning here’s what you should expect.

Spending and saving habits

It’s important that we take the time to understand your spending and saving habits. Knowing how much you earn isn’t enough; we need to understand how much of your income you spend and how much you save.

Saving for a rainy day

The sooner you start saving for retirement the better. If you have savings but don’t have a retirement plan don’t panic. The fact you have saved is a great start. These savings can be used as an emergency account with any excess used for immediate needs and your surplus allocated for retirement.

Do you have kids and will they be going to college?

Solidify your retirement first, then shift to educational needs. If you’re planning on sending your kids to college then you better have a plan for covering the cost of tuition fees, accommodation, and books – that’s just the beginning. There’s also food, transport, utilities, and a phone to think about. It’s definitely something we’ll want to discuss.

Short-term goals

It might be that you’re newlyweds and want to know where to start when it comes to financial planning. Will you have kids, buy a house, do you like to travel, or maybe you want to start your own business? There’s a lot to think and talk about.

Life insurance

Do you have life insurance? We can help you determine if the amount you have is appropriate for your situation. We will tell you if you don’t have enough and even if you have too much. If you have life insurance, we can help you understand your existing contracts.

We touched on it earlier; we need to know your financial goals and what your plans are for retirement.

Finally, understanding

If you’re new to financial planning you may think it’s a daunting task. A lot of people feel uneasy just talking about money so laying out a plan for your financial future can seem like something you might never achieve. If you’re not already saving don’t discount speaking with a financial advisor; everyone has to start somewhere. Our job is to offer solutions that align with your individual needs – not to sell you something that makes you uncomfortable. We want to get you to where you want to be. We will work with you when it comes to investing in your future.

For more information or to schedule a meeting with us please email or call 217.679.1043, we’d love to talk.
